17th of May Celebration 2012

Join us for the biggest 17th of May celebration outside of Norway!

Welcome to Seattle’s popular 17th of May celebration, a.k.a. Syttende Mai [Soot-n-duh My]. Last year’s parade brought over 20,000 spectators to the streets of Ballard to see more than 100 groups, including marching bands, Norwegian-American lodges, drill teams, classic cars and much more — all for Norway’s Constitution Day.

We’re the 17th of May Committee, a 501(c) nonprofit, and we’d like you to join us for the 2012 festivities, an annual Nordic party in Seattle since 1889.

Men and women, teenagers and families. They all come together in a daylong festival of music and dance, kids activities, a luncheon featuring a Norwegian dignitary, and the parade, of course, that starts down a mile-long stretch of Ballard at 6 p.m.

We plan on making this year’s Syttende Mai better than ever while also raising funds for local charities and nonprofits.

So come join the family fun. We’d love to hear you say: “Ya sure, you betcha!”

Summer Streets/Bike to Work Day Celebration 2012

The streets of downtown Ballard will be one massive bike party! Swing by Seattle's coolest neighborhood after work or school and help celebrate Cascade Bicycle Club’s Bike to Work Day and Summer Streets Party. For more info click here.

Ballard Greenways adds: Ballard's block party after Bike to Work Day! We'll have a table there, so stop by and talk with us! This is the same day as Ballard's Summer Streets party, so there will be lots going on.

Seattle Young People's Project 20th Anniversary FamBam!

This year’s FamBam will include a delicious dinner, our adrenaline-pumping dessert dash and a variety of other ways to support our work. It will also feature a film that our Adult Allies have been busily working on, which spotlights stories of SYPP alum experiences and milestones.

Trinity United Methodist Church 2nd Annual Outreach Auction

Trinity United Methodist Church (TUMC) is holding its 2nd annual live annual auction and dinner to support its outreach programs. The TUMC outreach programs serve those less fortunate in our community with healthy, hearty meals through our Saturday Soup and weekly Sandwich-Makers programs.

The volunteers who run these programs need your help to ensure that our doors remain open every Saturday and regular meal assistance is provided to the Angeline House weekly. You can help support these valuable programs by

Publicizing the event,
Joining us at the auction and dinner,
Inviting others to join you, and/or
Making a monetary donation.

The auction and dinner will be held at Saint Alphonsus Parish on May 19th, with the doors opening at 5:00 PM for registration, silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and beverages. Dinner, program and live auction begin at 7:00 pm. A donation of $60 (tables of 8 for $450) is requested to reserve a place at this worthwhile event.

Our Blog

SATURDAY SOUP is a non-denominational / non-sectarian soup kitchen which serves a light breakfast and full lunch every Saturday. Our mission is to provide a meal, encouragement, kindness and respect to our guests. Each week, our volunteer-only staff serves a diverse group of between 60 and 100 men, women and children who are homeless and low/fixed income.

The SANDWICH-MAKERS group gathers 2-3 times each month to prepare over 200 sandwiches for the women of the Angeline House, a women’s day shelter in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle.

2012 Sustainable Ballard Festival Open House

This year's Sustainable Ballard Festival (held Sept 30) will be presented as a Repair Fair! Let's talk about anything that can be presented this way, not just your toaster or bike, but your body, parks, government, community! We're adding another "R" to the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, for Repair!

Some of the Festival features already in the works are:

a new waste reduction campaign for Ballard
rebates and incentives for green home upgrades
a new group for Ballard Urban Gardeners (BUG)

Ballard Community Taskforce on Hunger and Homelessness - May 2012

This forum will be an open discussion place for any person concerned with homelessness and hunger in Ballard. All persons are welcome to the table and encouraged to participate in the conversation. The meeting adheres to a preset agenda and is led by an agreed upon chair who manages the discussion according to the timetable. Members of the taskforce reserve the right to change this format upon majority vote as necessary.

Mission of the Taskforce: The BCTHH works to end homelessness and hunger in the Ballard community by providing a forum for service providers, community advocates and governmental agencies to share information, capitalize on their collective resources and coordinate efforts. We will work as advocates of change and partners of compassion toward a just and supportive community.

Goals

Encourage local residents and community organizations to work with community members who face homeless and/or hunger.
Support and partner with non-profit, religious, government, for-profit and community groups who provide programs and resources for vulnerable residents in our community.
Mobilize resources within and outside Ballard to provide adequate food, shelter and supportive services for all residents of Ballard.
Provide a venue for honest, open discussion of the challenges faced by homeless residents and the groups that serve them, including ways to meet those challenges successfully.
Link individuals with unique challenges with organizations that provide relevant specialized services.

Having helped convert 3+ lawn plots in Ballard into food-producing gardens, I'm pleased at how useful some of the skills I learned on 10 acres in rural Virginia have become in urban Ballard!

As I talk with other Ballard gardeners, I noticed a desire to share.

Share knowledge, secrets, and good practices
Share tools and land
Share seeds and fertilizer
Share recipes and food
Share the work - digging, weeding, watering, harvesting
Share the celebration and the fun!

Tox-Ick Presentation and Pubic Conversation

Don't Feed the Tox-Ick Monster!

Sustainable Ballard and Tox-Ick are hosting a free educational event at the Ballard Library. After a presentation about urban stormwater runoff, audience members will engage in a Conversation Cafe dialogue facilitated by Liz Dunigan. Come share your insights as we begin to sense our connections to new possibilities for the future of our community.

Ballard Knitters for the Homeless - Jun 2012

Learn to knit! Learn new knitting skills! Bring yarn and needles if you have them - and some to share with those who don't if you can. Jody Grage is leading this group for anyone who would enjoy getting together monthly to knit simple hats and scarves for community members who do not have a warm home next Fall and Winter. No prior experience necessary! Jody will teach easy, pretty patterns and walk you through your project.

4th Annual Ballard Edible Garden Tour

Sustainable Ballard invites you to our walking / biking tour of NE Ballard food gardens.

Our goal is to educate and inspire folks to grow food by giving examples of creative uses of parking strips, containers, raised beds, bee houses, chicken coops, fruit trees & berries and more! Meet the gardeners and ask questions. Tour includes a dozen gardens to explore within walking distance of the Whittier Elementary School. $10 supports Sustainable Ballard's community projects.
