Please join YES! Magazine for a series of Puget Sound author and community discussion events featuring YES! co-founder and executive editor Sarah van Gelder.
Sarah will be speaking at several area independent bookstores January 9th-15th about the Occupy movement, and the new Occupy book from YES! Magazine and Berrett-Koehler Publishers:
THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING: OCCUPY WALL STREET AND THE 99% MOVEMENT
This newly-published anthology, edited by Sarah Van Gelder, is the first substantive book on the Occupy movement and brings together voices from inside and outside the protests to convey the issues, possibilities, and personalities associated with the Occupy Wall Street movement.
Contributors to the book include Naomi Klein, Rebecca Solnit, Ralph Nader, David Korten, and others, along with early Occupy activists such as David Graeber, Marina Stern, and Hena Ashraf. It offers insights for those actively protesting or expressing support for the movement—and for the millions more who sympathize with the goal of a more equitable and democratic future.
The Occupy Wall Street movement named the core issue of our time: the overwhelming power of Wall Street and large corporations —something the political establishment and most media have long ignored. But the movement goes far beyond this critique. This Changes Everything shows how the movement is shifting the way people view themselves and the world, the kind of society they believe is possible, and their own involvement in creating a society that works for the 99% rather than just the 1%.
These author events with Sarah offer a great way to look at what has happened to date with the Occupy movement, and how things might develop in the year ahead. Hope you can join us!
See Sarah's end-of-year column, with special emphasis on hopeful trends that the Occupy movement has generated and influenced, "The 12 Most Hopeful Trends to Build on in 2012"

Avoid the feeling of panic when your electrician says “Okay – where do you want your lights to go?” Renee Peru will discuss steps that need to happen before you begin to buy your lighting for your remodel or new construction project along with how to look at the array of choices out there in the world of lighting.
If your electrical placement is sound – your budget goes down!
Prior to starting her own lighting showroom, Renee Peru had spent 12 years working for commercial lighting showrooms. “The Antique Lighting Co” then opened in Seattle in 1987, which soon gained an excellent reputation for quality custom fixtures and sound lighting guidance, providing one on one consultation for every aspect of the residential lighting process. The most important service was to get involved early and oversee the physical lay out creating a plan that guaranteed in the end a well balanced flexible lighting scheme with less waste, less wattage, and a more comfortable environment – and she hopes to help you do the same!

- What time?
- 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Description of the 5-hour workshop: Join acclaimed author-teacher, Charles Eisenstein, in a workshop aimed to revolutionize your effectiveness as a leader, healer, and/or social activist in times of rapid change. Our society is entering a time of profound transition. We hear about crises in the economy, the ecosystem, health, education, water, energy, and more -- propelling our civilization toward a radically different way of living on planet earth. Such conditions call for a new kind of leader, and even a whole new paradigm of leadership. One that works with a partnership model and more horizontal types of communication / decision-making.
At stake are the deep questions, such as:
- "Who are we?"
- "What are we here to create?"
- "What is the role of humanity on earth, and how may I contribute to it?"
The registration fee for the workshop is a commitment deposit of $25. Additional donations, based on each participant's sense of gratitude, propriety and value, will be requested on the day of the workshop. To register, go here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/216846
Please feel free to forward this announcement to colleagues or people in your personal networks who you think would resonate with Charles' ideas. This is the first time for him to visit the west coast and we want to be sure that there's a warm welcome for him at each event, and a wide array of people who will take their thoughts, impressions, and further discussion in their communities.
Community Forum on the State Budget
organized by Fuse Washington
January 17, 2012
- Where?
- Southside Commons
- What time?

Not again. Not if we have anything to say about it. The budget cuts that are on the table this session are more than we as a state should ever have to bear. The money is out there, yet our most vulnerable are going without the basics. Kids who are in school right now, accessing underfunded education, don’t get to do it over when we get this sorted out. Elderly people who skip meals to stay on meds (or vice versa) don’t get a re-do either. I could go down the list but the point is clear. This is for real.
Fixing our state’s budget for the short and long term isn’t something that any of us, even Fuse, can do alone. So I am extending an invitation.
On Tuesday, January 17, we’re hosting a community forum right in the heart of South Seattle, Columbia City. We’ll have experts on the budget and the state legislature on hand to speak about our current challenges, and what we can do to build a more fair, just future for our state.
Join us on Tuesday, January 17, from 7-8:30pm at the Southside Commons in Seattle. Click below to reserve your seat:
$10 billion in budget cuts. Rising college tuition. Seniors losing health care. Our backwards tax system doesn’t serve us. It’s going to take all of us working together to rebuild an economy that works for all in Washington, not just some.
We know there are practical, progressive solutions that close our immediate budget shortfall and reform our state tax system for the long haul. Let’s talk about what they are and what we as a progressive community can do to make this happen.
Please join us on Tuesday, January 17, from 7-8:30pm at the Southside Commons in Seattle for a community forum. Click below to reserve your seat:

Food Movements Unite! Strategies to Transform Our Food Systems In communities around the world the power of the people is at work regaining control of our ailing food systems. According to the latest book from Food First, the global food movement is diverse, widespread, refreshingly creative and tremendously powerful. Food Movements Unite! Strategies to Transform Our Food Systems brings us the words, insights and vision of the remarkable farmers, workers and consumers from rural and urban communities around the globe as they address the critical question:
How can we unite to transform the global food system? The 21 activists and practitioners contributing to this work write “from the trenches” of the food, fuel and environmental crises have much to say about our food future and the potential of this unprecedented “movement of movements.” From the writings of Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved and Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, to João Pedro Stédile of the Brazilian Landless Worker’s Movement, this insightful book is a window into the thinking and actions of the people committed to bringing us affordable, healthy food in ways that harm neither the planet nor its people.
Speaker Bios:
