The 35th Pathway of Lights, the annual lighting of the path around Green Lake, is scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2011, 5-8 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is free.

The “walk of lights” is lit up by luminarias that line Green Lake’s pathway. Walkers are encouraged to bring their own lights and candles to add to the ambiance.

As many of 10,000 participants have attended in the past.

Volunteers are needed to help place and light the thousands of luminaria and to clean up after the event. Individuals, businesses, community organizations, and school and scout groups are welcome to participate. Event setup will be 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., the lighting of the candles takes place at 5 p.m., and cleanup is from 8 – 9 p.m.

Music groups of 20 people or less are also needed to play unamplified holiday music at the event. Musicians will be located at four sites around the lake: the Green Lake Community Center on the east side, the Green Lake Small Craft Center (the Aqua Theater) on the south side, the Bathhouse Theater (Seattle Public Theatre) on the north side and the arch on the east of side of the community center. Performances last 30-45 minutes.

Warm drinks and treats will be available at the four music sites, as will donation bins for non-perishable food items for Northwest Harvest.

The Pathway of Lights at Green Lake is sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Parks and Recreation Green Lake Advisory Council. Open House and Press Tour
Saturday, December 10, 2011
3 pm to 4 pm, followed by a party for friends and family.
Beer, wine, and light refreshments will be served.

Eric Thomas and Alexandra Salmon will be offering tours of their new home, the first in Seattle to produce more energy than it uses. On hand to answer questions will be Ted L. Clifton, the designer of the house, and Ted W. Clifton, the builder, as well as the suppliers of some of the house’s key energy-saving components.
With its air-tight shell, structural insulated panel (SIP) construction, numerous south-facing windows, highly efficient heat pump, and 6,000-watt solar panel array on the roof, this one-of-a-kind house has no electrical bills and costs nothing to heat. No oil, natural gas, or other fuels are used. The home sends power to the city’s electrical grid when the sun is out and draws it during the night or on cloudy days. (Contrary to popular belief, the Pacific Northwest is an excellent place for solar.) Averaged over the entire year, the panels produce more power than the house uses.
Not only will Thomas and Salmon not pay any energy bills for as long as they own their house, which saves hundreds of dollars a month at today’s rates, but Washington State’s incentive program will pay them nearly $1,000 a year for the next nine years. They’ll also receive a 30% federal tax credit for their solar installation at the end of this year, equal to about $9,000.

Fremont Arts Council 2011 Feast of the Winter Solstice In Ballard! (see below for important pre-event info)

If you have never had a chance to participate and experience this amazing event, or haven't in a while, this is the year.

Fremont Arts Council has a marvelous and huge space this year in Ballard that will accommodate a larger event and lots of artworks and installations. There will be feasting, toasting, dancing and revelry of all sorts. Live music, the lovely Tea House, sanctuary, artworks everywhere. Dress in your favorite Solstice finery or costume and see all the lovely faces in the candle light!

--Invitations and Tickets--two ways to get into the event this year.

  1. Volunteers receive an *Invitation* to enter free of charge. Volunteers are asked to help build and decorate for some hours in the days before Solstice, and/or do night-of jobs. Many hands ensures the event flows easy, is fun for all, and is well cared for. Limited to 200. Please go to Volunteer Registration: myfremont.org if you want to be part of the Feast Crew.
  2. Buy a *Ticket* for $25.00. FAC is doing this for the first time this year to simplify attendance for some and lower everyone's stress at this busy time of year. Some people have time to work on the event, some don't, but everyone can relax and contribute in whatever way is best for them. (One Ticket = One Admittance) No tickets sold at the door day-of event so plan ahead. Brownpapertickets.com

--Food and Feasting
The richness of the Feast comes from all our contributions. Surprise us all with something amazing to eat! Everyone whether registered to volunteer or with ticket brings delicious gifts for the feast table to share with the community. We break bread at 7:00 PM.

--Next Day
Since they will be walking on air, participants are asked to help a little if possible with clean up the next day (22nd) 9am-5pm. This is a volunteer-run event by and for artists AND anyone who appreciates artists in the community.

Sustainable Ballard Holiday Party!!!

Please join us in celebrating all there is to celebrate this season:
Having made it through the holidays! The end of an eventful year! The beginning of another one! The days are getting longer again! Ourselves and each other!

Drop by anytime and raise a glass (or two) with your fellow Sustainable Ballardites, enjoy good food and good company with old friends and new. We’ll regale you with all that Sustainable Ballard has made happen this year (you are sure to be impressed!) and talk about our hopes for the coming year.

Party at our friend and partner's The Stepping Stone (21 & over) at 5903 24th Ave. NW, featuring locally made beer, NW wine and saké, local art, locally made furniture from locally salvaged wood and sustainable materials, and the best vinyl music, spun lovingly by owner Robby Becker. Plus - a portion of the proceeds will benefit Sustainable Ballard!

Have a couple hours to help with the party? We would be grateful! Please contact Jenny. Thanks!

New Year’s Eve Day

Plan OCCUPATION 2012!

SATURDAY, 12/31 at NOON

Whether you’ve occupied in the past or are curious about an occupied future, come and support the common good.

  • It’s up to us: business, labor, government, universities, religions, unaffiliated!
  • It’s up to us: conservatives, progressives, libertarians and independents!
  • Let us learn together how to:
    • Model respectful, inclusive, post-partisan dialogue on issues that matter.
    • Reawaken our empathy for each other.
    • Build a community based on morality, sustainability, justice and peace.
    • Promote self-governance solutions rooted in innovation and entrepreneurship
    • Provide a compassionate response to those in need.
    • Utilize collective thinking to construct a better future together.

Free!!

Join your friends, families, neighbors and fellow citizens who are also committed to inspiring public awareness, entrepreneurship and political action to promote liberty, justice and equal opportunity for everyone.

For the past 12 years we have gathered on New Year's Eve day to reflect upon the year that's passed and to prepare for the year ahead. After the community dialogue we take a Peace walk around Green Lake.

It was at this session 2 years ago that we introduced the idea of Seattle being the first city in the world to affirm the Charter for Compassion; there are now 70 cities around the world that are in this process. You can learn more here.

This year will be unlike any other. The awakening and rising of the Occupy Movement has literally changed everything. We are inspired by this awakening and are interested in strengthening its growth.

This event is an open community dialogue focused on co-creating our plans for Occupation 2012. Please come and share your plans for direct actions, activities, and events. If you have ideas that you want to share and formulate into plans, this is an ideal place to make that happen. This is a chance to reach out to the community at large and to gain more support for the work happening locally and globally.

The Interfaith Community Church is the oldest operating church in King County and if you've never been there you are in for a treat. Many Occupiers know Jamal Rahman and his participation through the Occupy Sanctuary. This is his home church. Pasted below are the details about the event and attached is a flyer.

Like Occupy This Moment, which took place December 10th, this event is being organized by an unsanctioned, leaderless group of individuals acting as concerned citizens interested in strengthening the common good. If you have any questions please contact Jon Ramer 206 972-7356.
