How do I italicize and embolden some text?
You enclose a piece of text within multiple apostrophes. Two apostrophes on both sides of the text will italicize. Three of them will embolden, and five will italicize and embolden. See the examples below.

You can italicize text by putting 2 apostrophes on each side. 3 apostrophes will embolden the text. 5 apostrophes will embolden and italicize the text. (4 apostrophes just emboldens -- with 'one apostrophe left over'.) |
You can ''italicize text'' by putting 2 apostrophes on each side. 3 apostrophes will embolden '''the text'''. 5 apostrophes will embolden and italicize '''''the text'''''. (4 apostrophes just emboldens -- with ''''one apostrophe left over''''.) |
Gotchas
- Make sure you have the same number of apostrophes on both sides of the text you want to highlight. If, for example you have three on the left side, and 2 on the right side, you'll get 'italicized text with an apostrophe left over.
- No white space between the groups of apostrophes.
- The text to be highlighted (i.e. italicized or emboldened, or both) must all be on the same line. You can't highlight several paragraphs of text at once, you have to highlight each one separately: put a set of apostrophes at the beginning, and one after the last character of the paragraph.

Usually, if your apostrophes left and right are mismatched, the result is unpredictable, but it's easy to tell what happened, because there is one or more apostrophe left over on either side. 'three on the left, two on the right two on the left, four on the right'' five on the left, one on the right' |

Here is a long text, and I want it all italicized, not just the first sentence. But I'm typing a line break between the two sentences, so the second sentence is not italicized. |
