From Sustainable Ballard

Hello Neighbors -
The story is changing. The recent recession has given alot of folks time to think about what is really important to them. The Occupy movements and the lastest election campaigns have us thinking about our rights and responsibilities as citizens. The development of social media has us connecting with old friends and new ideas with a fresh perspective. It seems we are tired of the same old story.
Here at Sustainable Ballard we have seen a surge in new leaders and volunteers ready to re-create our community as we would like to see it: resilient, inclusive, joyful and active. Online, folks are taking the same approach to the world: writing blogs to express themselves, tweeting or retweeting the important news of the day, and pulling like-minded folks together to tell corporations and government agencies how to act. A recent NY Times article demonstrates how individuals and small groups are using one site, change.org, with great success.
This month at our Monthly Gathering, we will be exploring Social Media: what's out there, how it's being used, the opportunities and challenges of using social media for social change, and what lies ahead. And when we get together and figure out what we want from social media, we might just come up with a new story ourselves!
Monthly Gathering
March 26th, 6:30-9:00 pm, Sunset Hill Community Association
Social Media for Social Change

From conversation to community building to revolution.

Think Green Recycling Tip: E-cycling
With just 2 weeks left in the Think Green Recycling Challenge, we bring you this final tip:
Residents, as well as small businesses, charities, school districts, and small governments, can bring a variety of electronics to a drop-off center for proper recycling. With almost 30 locations in Seattle alone, E-cycling drop-offs are conveniently located throughout Washington state. E-cycle Washington calls it "small effort, big return," because simply dropping off your old electronics in your neighborhood plays a significant role in protecting the environment from toxic chemicals and gives us a chance to reuse or recycle old materials. Only 2% of the volume of electronics ends up in a landfill.
For specifics on locations, accepted materials, and other services, visit their easy to navigate website: www.ecyclewashington.org.
DIY Home Weatherization Workshop Marco Mazzoni and Sarah Sullivan of NW Home Comfort will offer a free presentation on the things you can do yourself to make your home more energy efficient and comfortable. They'll also describe the various incentives and rebates available from the city for energy efficiency improvements for your home. SB is pleased to present this workshop in collaboration with NW Home Comfort as well as Umpqua Bank, who offers a line of specialized loans for energy improvements for small home owners. Thursday, March 22, 6:30PM. See flyer for more details. RSVP requested.

An easy way to support Sustainable Ballard!
Did you know that the good folks at Ballard Market will give us 1% of everything you purchase? In 2011, that meant we received over $400 because you shopped at Ballard Market AND gave us your receipts. How do you get them to us? Bring them to any Sustainable Ballard event or drop them in the mail to: Sustainable Ballard, 2442 NW Market St. #286, Seattle 98107.
